Show and Tell Tuesday: Service Projects

Today I am linking up with Andrea for my favorite show and tell Tuesday yet!

Today is all about service projects.

Ever since I was young my mom and grandparents instilled in me the importance of giving back. I would go to church work days on Saturday with my pop and help clean up the church and older people's homes/yards. Each year on my birthday my mom and I would go through my clothes and toys and donate the too small clothes and toys that I did not need. Then every Thanksgiving and Christmas I would get to help put meals together for the shut ins and go deliver them with my pop. I have so many great memories of me and my pop just driving through the country delivering meals.

Now my grandparents run our church's Helping Hand Ministry. Helping Hands is a food and clothing bank for people in the community. This is a truly AMAZING ministry! Rising Star has a population of 800 people and Helping Hands has yet to ever run out of food or clothing. People in the community continuously give every single month. Helping Hands is open two days a week and my grandparents say about 20 to 30 people come in each day they are open. I am just so proud of them! They continue to do great things.

In college I volunteered at Good Samaritan Ministries in Brownwood. Good Samaritan services the people of Brown county and it is a  food and clothing bank and they also help with bills for people that are in need. I loved my time there and often worked in the clothing section. I mostly sorted clothes or worked the register.

One year in college my social work class took a weekend trip to Waco and were homeless for the weekend. We worked with Mission Waco and I had a great time.

We were only allowed three personal possessions, I had a tooth brush, my jacket, and my sleeping bag. It was October after all. We were taken to a Good Will and told to pick new clothes out and new shoes. There were about 100 students from all over and we were only given a couple of minutes to find those items. Needless to say I have a big foot and got stuck with men's shoes.

My friend got a good look, where I got a skirt and men's shoes.

We then spent the weekend walking the streets of Waco looking for food and resources. We also went to a lower income apartments and played with the children.

One thing I will NEVER forget is when we were walking up to the apartments there was a large dumpster and there were two boys about 8 years old, going through all of the trash looking for coke cans. When asked what they were doing they said that they go through the trash and look for cans so they can sell them and have some extra money for food.

Y'all..... my heart hurt. Just that morning I was complaining about it being cold, feeling dirty, and how I thought it was a silly thing to be homeless for a weekend.

Little did I know, how the Lord was going to work in my heart.

I came back from that weekend with a new outlook and often bring up my experience with others to share my heart and hopefully bring some awareness to this population.

An article about the trip and my thoughts was written Here

While I was working at Child Protective Services, my volunteering was lacking. I hate to say that, but it did.

Each year we do gifts from the Angel Tree and donate to the rainbow rooms at CPS. I have way too many magazine subscriptions and I donate all the magazines to the local domestic violence shelter.

This year I am hoping to join the county's Child Welfare Board and work with foster children. I am so excited about this new opportunity!

Last but not least thanks to Andrea and her great post about Cards for Hospitalized Kids, I would have never known about this great organization.

Adrian makes cards with his jr. high kids at school a couple of times a year and I use it with the kids at each of our parent trainings and support groups. Not only are you brighting someones day by sending them a card, but it is also a great teaching opportunity!

I can't wait to read about all of the service projects every one else is doing!

100

I honestly have no idea where to begin this post.

This is my 100th post. How crazy is that? I often wonder if I should even be blogging. I mean I don't have any children, I don't do fun Pinterest worthy crafts, or know the first thing about up-to-date fashion. I ask myself all of the time does anyone read this and if they do what do they think about me?

Often times, I talk about my husband, our life that revolves around sports, or how stressful my life can get. I love talking about all of these things but I often wonder is there more I can talk about that just those three things. Who knows? But tonight I am going to give it a try.

While I was in undergrad I looked for social work blogs and I could not find many of them. I was a little disappointed because social work is an amazing profession and we (social workers) should be proud of the work we are doing and wanting to share that with others. So, this post might be will be social work heavy.

This week I am at TCU in training for Trust Based Relational Intervention. It really is amazing. If you have a chance I would recommend reading The Connected Child by Dr. Karyn Purvis.

Tonight my heart is heavy. My heart is heavy for all of the babies that are crying tonight and no one is there to pick them up and love them. My heart is heavy for the three year old who is going to bed hungry. My heart is heavy for the ten year old that is tucking in her younger siblings because a caregiver isn't home to do it. My heart is heavy for the seventeen year old who is about to age out of foster care, and scared because he has never had a family. My heart is just heavy.

I knew from a young age that I wanted to be a social worker and help children. I often doubt myself and wonder if I am really helping. Who knows if I truly am? I hope I am. I love my job and I feel beyond blessed that the Good Lord called me in this direction. Then there are nights like tonight where I do not feel that I am doing enough. I pray daily that I am doing what the Lord has called me to do and to have the strength to do it at my best ability. Some days it is hard to feel that prayer being answered. I know I should not doubt but my own "worldly self" gets in the way. Tonight I was working and when I took a break I got on Pinterest and came across this:

This hit me to my core. Why would I question God? Why can't I trust that He has entrusted me with this role in my life?

Is it because I see the broken in this world daily and feel helpless?  Is it because I have seen more horrific things than I ever thought?  Is it because these children who have done nothing wrong, are being hurt?  Is it because I am angry that these bad things happen to these precious children?  Is it because I am hardened from all of the bad things I have seen?  Is it because I am 23 years old and feel like I am a lot older?  Is it because secondary trauma is real and I refused to believe it?

Why can't I believe in myself?

How long will it take?

Maybe I am already there?

I know that I care beyond belief for these children around the world tonight that are feeling un-loved. If there was any way for me to reach them all and give them a hug and let them know that they are loved.

If all of us could show one child that they are loved and that they can be anything they want to be. In a few generations I would hope that there wouldn't be those children in the world who are feeling unloved.

There are so many things we could all do for these children and one I saw this week on Facebook that one of my friends shared was Sharing Birthday Joy.

I am in love with this idea!

From their website:

Our Mission:

We provide all the goodies for an entire birthday party in a box for foster and homeless children in Central Texas.

How awesome is that?

We can all do something. It doesn't have to be anything like donating but just praying for these children and the people who work with them and care for them.

This is me.
This is my why.
This is my heart.
This is my passion.
This is my prayer tonight.
This is what I am feeling tonight.
This is as transparent as I have ever be on here.

Please give an extra hug and kiss to your children tonight and pray for all of those children who will not receive one tonight.

P.S. ~ I believe it took me 100 posts to create something worth sharing.

P.S.S ~ I am linking up with Holly, who also does amazing things in her community to show love to others!

P.S.S.S ~ I LOVE reading the blogs that are about a person's child(ten) and how they do life,  fun Pinterest worthy crafts, and great fashion.

Weekend - Wrap Up: Week 1

Happy Monday Y'all!

This weekend went by WAY to fast.

Friday was GAME DAY, better known as my favorite day.

I got to spend a couple of minutes with this guy before he had to leave to get on the bus.

beautiful

The best part?! ELKS WIN!

When I finally got home.
I am not sure what time the hubs got back, well after I went to bed at midnight.

I slept in on Saturday while the hubs was off to watch film before the sun was up. He went out to scout while I headed to Temple to celebrate a little guy get adopted by a great family!

Then I may have spent a little much at Target and got some cute curtains. That are being put up by the hubs as I type this :)

Sunday was filled with cleaning, laundry, and grad school. School has now started again and I want to cry. Only three more semesters. Let the countdown begin!

Here is to a good week!

Waiting on Wednesday: Food for thought

Yay for this week being half way over!

Which means I am linking up with Holly for Waiting on Wednesday.

So instead of me sharing about my no good, bad couple of days I thought I would share this article that spoke to me this week!

This has been my favorite that has been on my heart. This article appeared in People Magazine. This sweet lady started an organization were she and others pack backpacks with food and take them to the children in need everyday! Unfortunately I have seen children go hungry and I still see the effects it has on children even later in their life. You can read the article Here.

I also want to give a HUGE shout out to Holly for ALL of the work her and the other people are doing at their local food bank. YOU GUYS ROCK!

I know I take food for granted and thankfully I have never had to do without but there are a lot of people out there that do go without.

I don't mean to be a Debbie Downer but this week this has been on my heart.

On a positive note I get to see one of my little guys that I worked with when I worked in foster care get adopted tomorrow!

I am so excited!

And then tomorrow night is meet the teacher and some how my husband has convinced me that handing out Root Beer Floats in his classroom is a good idea.

Let's hope I don't make a HUGE mess!

Weekend Wrap Up: Training & Baby Shower Fun

Another busy weekend down. I must say it was a great one!

On Friday night we hung out at the house and watched some movies.

Ty and I ran to the gas station and saw this beautiful sky.

On Saturday morning I was up at 3:00 am making muffins for some awesome adoptive parents for a training that morning.

Then a little after 5 am I loaded up and headed out to New Braunfels

I jammed out to 90s on 9 for most of the trip

I am not a big fan of Bagels but these were AMAZING!
Too bad the closest one is in Austin :(

I didn't get many pictures from Saturday due to working but I had a great time learning and meeting sweet people!

I did see a double rainbow

So pretty

Sunday we headed out to R Star to celebrate one of my BFF's sweet baby girl.

Me and Kasey in HS

There are five of us and some how we became the Fab 5
I love them so much!
They have been with me through every step of my life.
It amazes me how we were all friends when we were little and we still are the best of friends today.
